The main tactics of the alarmists appear to be:
   1. Avoid discussing actual data and trends, relying on computer
        models instead
   2. Continually list the scary things that could happen if global
warming turns out to be severe
   3. Denounce anyone who questions their assumptions as "deniers"
        and (now) "traitors"
   4. Demand that such “deniers” and “traitors” be silenced

If the science were really "settled," the alarmists could easily bury skeptics in a barrage of fact and logic without having to resort to the tactics that Lysenko used to silence his detractors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trofim_Lysenko). The fact that they do not suggests that perhaps fact and logic are not on their side.

While naturally ost would adapt--by trning on a.c. and what not, most of the government interventions are (by design or not) deminishing our human ability to adapt--reducing electric generation capacity (when demanded by hot weather) by developing wind (never there when you need it) or telling us to just turn our thermostats up to avoid blackouts. Maybe just their way to get us used to higher temps?

Thanks for answering my question Chip. Hm, well, I don't think I need a copy of any of the papers, but thanks for offering! :)

Andrew,

We found that summer time daily high apparent temperature (a combination of temperature and humidity) was rising in most cities (including in the Southeast) during our period of record (early 1960s through the late 1990s). Probably largely from the heat island effect , but larger-scale climate changes could have been involved as well.

So the declines in heat-related mortality occurred even in the face of rising temperatures. Clearly folks are adapting.

-Chip

PS. If you are interested in a copy any of our papers on the topic, I'll gladly pass one along to you.

BTW Chip-to what extent are the changes or lack there of in heat related mortality connected to regional trends? I know that John Christy has shown that in the Southeastern US the temperature has declined...Because the focus is on cities, would that tend to mean that UHI's make that largely irrelevant? Thanks in advance.
