Highly recommend Huber/Mills "The Bottomless Well". Also Huber's "Hard Green". And to close the loop on the REAL state of the environment and energy reality, read Lomborg's "The Skeptical Environmentalist", too.

Having done so, it is crystal clear that all the neo-Malthusianism, predictions of climate apocalypse, species extinction, etc. are hyperbole attempting to advance political agendas. Too much of which will doom America to decaying prosperity, which will ultimately harm the environment more than free-market oriented growth with the right regulations.

In the early 1980s when I was involved in supply/demand forecasting for California at CEC we were always on the search for the "phantom appliance" that would cause demanad to rise (significantly) even in light of efficiency improvements--at the time we were worried about the "next fax machine." Well the internet came along, as did lots of other machines/end uses.
What's particularly intersting about this particular phenomenon is that electric power has changed in quality as well as quantity. Most of the newer applications, like internet servers, banking and telecomunnications, require "perfect power"...nine 9s reliability as well as power quality. To a growing extent, electricity is becoming a value added service and no longer the "electrons by the trainload" commodity it once was. Many (most?) of the new supply options pushed by the Administration in the name of climate management (such as wind) move us further away from achieving perfect power (at the point of use) rather than closer.
Finally--and perhaps the sweet irony--is that the so-called "smart grid" everyone is in a lather about depends on--wait--wait--wait--YES! the internet.

If the internet is not a big emitter, then why are there tons of places on the internet where you can see "this site is carbon neutral" banner stickers? Why does Blackle, the "energy saving" Google exist? I can't believe anyone would be deluded enough to think the series of tubes wouldn't use a lot of energy.
